Sunday, April 18, 2004 Wondering.. I'm seriously wondering why i'm talking to some student from Sri Lanka on msn now.. I have no idea how he/she got my add and it's quite weird.. And the person's using some funny abbreviations which singaporeans like me don't understand. Anyway.. St. Pat's ensembles wern't bad. The baritone sax and bass clarinetist were like solid and their band major of music did the flute and piccolo like it's no one's business. TWE saxophonists.. u missed out on a solo by quite a technically proficient alto saxophonist. Please do not miss out on more by attending the following concerts: 1)St. Patrick's 2)St. Andrew's 3)Siglap AJ, MJ and SAJC are having concerts too. u can approach me or malorie for details. I'm telling the Sri Lankan student about computer prices in Singapore.. save me! Cheryl and i rushed off to the National Stadium in a cab from Marine Parade.. So in 15 minutes we're watching St. Patrick ensembles and the next thing we know we're at the stadium watching display bands banging on their toms and snares. The experience was both terrifying and an eye opener. The way they whack the perc instruments is quite cruel, but that's part and parcel of bringing the volume to a fill-the-whole-stadium level. There was this band, their trumpets are so out of tune they sound like someone constipating. And there was another's whose lines wern't really that straight. But basically all the bands could march quite decently. Cheryl and i were like lost for 10 seconds when we entered the grand stand. We were going "Where to sit", "so many ppl", "start already!". But in the end we walked to the left-hand side and found some empty seats. Out of the blue Jacintha appeared with her friends, so we sort of sat together. And here came Malorie the late. Cheryl was telling her over the phone,"you just come up and turn left.. walk all the way straight... when we see you we'll scream...." Ooh, quite power ah. So she joined us after half the bands finished their performances. Bands which took part were Deyi, Bukit Panjang,West Spring, combined Ping Yi and Springfield, TK, Yusoff Ishak and Bowen. I salute Bowen's drum major man.. his macework was powerful. The spinning was like a helicopter. Yusoff Ishak's drum major was great too, catching all his throws nicely except for one which touched the ground a little. His name's Edmund and Edmund, if u ever read this.. u rock! Thanks for teaching me the macework last year. I think these 2 drum majors were the most impressive. Impressive bands were TK and Bowen. TK was more of musical impressiveness and Bowen more of display impressiveness. I hope i don't create any central judging controversies like our friendly CO boy.. TK did Ross Royston can.. and 7th Night of July, Sound was not too blasty but loud enough and accuracy was a little off due to the huge echoes in the stadium. Every band had that problem. Bowen's movements and little gimmicks were quite cute. Suddenly there were these little flags they took out of their pocket or something like that.. I sound so suaku can. Aaron was standing amidst the screaming supporters, recording the bands with his Nafa friends. Lucky.. he/she went offline. Phew.. After an hour of oohs and ahhs my mouth was going to drop. The experience is inbloggable.. Results were released a grueling 15 minutes later. Adjudicators were Captain Phillip Tng, Suprintendent Idris (i think), this Thai guy, Mitsuo Nonami and i think there's one more.. Mitsuo Nonami's like everywhere. Primary School Central Judging, Outdoor Band Central Judging.. Flown in all the way from Japan. High demand.. I wonder why our marching snares, bass and Merry Widow aren't in from Japan yet. Probably blown off course in the middle of the South China Sea. Top four bands to compete on 3rd of July are: 1)Bowen 2)Deyi 3)Ping Yi and Springfield 4)TK So ppl cried, hugged, fainted, pretended to faint, ran around the stadium and here came the encore part. THE most messy rendition of victory songs i've ever heard in my life. Every band was doing their own piece infront of their supporters and the only thing i could hear was a construction site. Someone should look into that.. Primary School SYF and Outdoor Com were definitely (this is the correct way to spell it, in case some ppl don't know) interesting sights in the band movemet. I so hope our band members actually make an effort to find out more instead of just doing the usual stuff. There's politics, conventions, competitions, concerts etc. going on in the band world. Go and indulge in the good ones, they can only benefit u. Line Dancing Rocks~ a ranting by Eugene at 1:10 AM |
